#1. Implanted devices – what happens when the maker goes bust?
Now, a brilliant investigation by Nature magazine has highlighted another reason why we need a registry of implanted people: the disaster patients face when the manufacturer of a device that has become vital to their well-being goes bankrupt. The article’s author, Liam Drew, talks to people who have been implanted with devices that mitigate the excruciating effects of what is known as cluster headaches. When the San Francisco startup behind the device went bankrupt, it was left without access to the software needed to update the device or the ability to replace the battery.

Perhaps the regulators need to ask companies not just whether their devices work and are safe, but whether they are built on open source principles so they can continue to be accessible and upgradable even after the demise of their creators.

#3. UK tech investment falls 22% in ‘year of two halves’
UK technology investment dropped 22% this year, one of the steepest falls in Europe, amid difficult economic headwinds that have forced startups to slash valuations and make mass layoffs. Despite the notable decline in tech investment, the UK continues to be a magnet for investment and remains Europe’s best-funded country, receiving 35% of all investment over the past five years.

France has taken the UK’s title as the third largest listed tech nation, with Britain moving down to fourth. The two countries combined are responsible for half of all European venture capital (VC).

#4. Big Oil has engaged in a long-running climate disinformation campaign
Big Oil companies have engaged in a “long-running greenwashing campaign” while raking in “record profits at the expense of American consumers,” the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee has found after a year-long investigation into climate disinformation from the fossil fuel industry.

The committee found the fossil fuel industry is “posturing on climate issues while avoiding real commitments” to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Lawmakers said it has sought to portray itself as part of the climate solution, even as internal industry documents reveal how companies have avoided making real commitments. “Today’s documents reveal that the industry has no real plans to clean up its act and is barreling ahead with plans to pump more dirty fuels for decades to come,” House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney told CNN in a statement.
