Coming out Day: Stop the excuses and accept everyone for who they are!
A recent event sadly reminded us of the importance of a day like today in the fight and mobilization for the acceptance of everyone.
Less than 48 hours ago, a Spanish and world soccer legend, a role model for millions of young people, came out on his Twitter account.
Within seconds, his tweet triggered an avalanche of homophobic insults. All his achievements, all his performances, all his victories were good to throw in the trash.
As bad luck never comes alone, one of his former teammates was quick to joke heavily in response.
The story could have ended there, but as the expression goes, they drunk the chalice to the dregs. A few hours later, the coming out Tweet was deleted and replaced by a publication claiming the account was hacked.
The Spanish press insisted that there was never any hacking and that this false coming out was either humor tinged with irony, or a backfire in order to silence the rumors about a possible affair with a well-known journalist in Spain.
Since then, the different protagonists have, of course, apologized to the LGBT+ community but the damage was done. Imagine how all the young people who are about to come out feel.
However, this is 2022, we are in Europe and yet we still have a long way to go to accept each other.
